CFP Appearances & Championships

Must read

Introduction to College Football Playoff

Several programs are about to make their College Football Playoff debut. The opening round of the 2025-26 CFP will see the No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels, No. 7 Texas A&M Aggies, No. 10 Miami Hurricanes, No. 11 Tulane Green Wave and No. 12 James Madison Dukes play their first-ever playoff games. And the quarterfinals will feature the introduction of the No. 4 Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The CFP stage, however, isn’t anything new to programs like the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes, No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs and No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide. Those teams not only boast several playoff appearances, but they have also been crowned champions multiple times.

So, which programs have been to the most playoffs since the CFP began? And who has the most titles? Here’s what to know:

History of the College Football Playoff

The CFP debuted as a four-team event in the 2014-15 season. The first 10 editions of the CFP had four-team fields. The 2025-26 playoff is the 12th-ever edition, and the second to feature 12 teams.

First College Football Playoff

The inaugural playoff included No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Oregon, No. 3 Florida State and No. 4 Ohio State. The fourth-seeded Buckeyes — a team that featured the likes of Joey Bosa, Michael Thomas and Ezekiel Elliott — were crowned champions after upsetting the Crimson Tide in the semifinal Sugar Bowl and crushing the Marcus Mariota-led Ducks in the championship game.

Teams with the Most College Football Playoff Appearances

Alabama boasts more CFP appearances than any other program, making nine of the 12 playoffs. Ohio State has pulled into a tie with the Clemson Tigers for the second-most CFP appearances with seven. Georgia and the Oklahoma Sooners are next with five appearances each, followed by the Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Oregon with three appearances apiece.

The Indiana Hoosiers, Texas Longhorns and Washington Huskies are the only other teams to make the playoff more than once, all appearing twice.

College Football Playoff National Championships

Alabama also owns the most national championships in the CFP era with three. The Crimson Tide won it all in the 2015-16, 2017-18 and 2020-21 seasons. They also have recorded three runner-up finishes, meaning they reached six of the 11 championship games.

Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State are the other programs with multiple CFP-era national titles, each owning two. The Bulldogs are the only team to go back-to-back, while the Buckeyes were crowned champions of the first-ever CFP and last season’s inaugural 12-team CFP.

Michigan and the LSU Tigers were each the last team standing in the CFP once.
