Sumitomo to Revamp InterContinental Century City for $98 Million

Background

Four years ago, Sumitomo Realty & Development quietly closed its InterContinental Century City hotel at the dawn of the pandemic. The 17-story, 375-room hotel is located at 2151 Avenue of the Stars, next to Fox Studios.

Recent History

The hotel, previously known as the J.W. Marriott and later the Park Hyatt, was acquired by Sumitomo in 1989 for $85 million. In 2016, the hotel gained notoriety when a lawsuit alleged that Sean "Diddy" Combs had purchased a hallway security video of him allegedly kicking his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura for $50,000. Combs is currently in a New York jail, where he is awaiting trial on federal charges of coercing and abusing women.

Renovation Plans

This month, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety issued Sumitomo a construction permit for a $98 million renovation of the hotel. The project, designed by Gensler and Pankow Builders, will include makeovers to the building’s infrastructure, public areas, guestrooms, restaurants, lobby, reception areas, meeting rooms, and offices.

Upgrades

The renovation will feature a new pool bar, restrooms, and boardroom on the second floor, as well as a converted guest room suite to be used as an office for human resources staff. The exterior will also include the addition of a new trellis at the ground floor, as well as new "hardscaping" such as rocks, gravel, and wood, and landscaping.

Timeline and Reopening Date

A timeline for construction and a scheduled reopening date have not been disclosed.
