At the end of this week, North and Central Texas are expected to see hazardous winter weather, including snow, ice and freezing temperatures. School Districts Prepare for Potential Closures
Several school districts in Collin County have yet to make a decision on whether to cancel classes or release students early on Friday. As of Wednesday afternoon, spokespeople for Allen ISD, Blue Ridge ISD, Celina ISD, Princeton ISD, Prosper ISD and Wylie ISD said the districts have not planned to cancel classes yet, but will continue to monitor weather forecasts and may make a decision closer to Friday.
Communication Plans for School Closures
A spokesperson for Frisco ISD said decisions about school closures or event cancellations will be communicated with families and staff via text, phone call, email and updates to social media and the district’s website. The district rescheduled swimming and diving meets and basketball and soccer games that had been previously planned for Friday.
Wylie ISD rescheduled the Wylie High School musical previously planned for this week to next weekend. The district also rescheduled some athletic events. The district’s usual procedure is to notify parents about school closures the day of before 5:30 a.m., once the superintendent checks road conditions across the district and consults with local emergency management officials and neighboring superintendents.
Preparations for Winter Weather
The district will not delay school start times because of the complications that would create for transportation. Trent Hamilton, chief of operations at Blue Ridge ISD, said the district also rescheduled sporting events — high school basketball games that were planned for Friday will be held on Thursday instead. Hamilton said district officials will attend Zoom meetings with the local weather service office on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to keep abreast of updates to the forecast.
“We haven’t made any decisions about closing school on Friday or Monday but we’re looking at the weather pretty regularly,” Hamilton said.
