Domestic Violence Incident in Rockwall Home
The 80-year-old man who police say shot and wounded his wife in their Rockwall home earlier this week said “it was either him or her” just before shooting her, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit obtained Friday by The Dallas Morning News.
Stephen Boewe was taken into custody Sunday in connection with shooting his wife, Cathy, 72. He is accused of shooting her in the abdomen inside of their Rockwall home located in the 600 block of Stafford Circle.
Boewe is facing one first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault with family violence, according to Rockwall police.
Incident Report and Arrest
Police wrote in the affidavit that Boewe was found by responding officers “behind a closed clear glass storm door” inside of his neighbor’s home located in the same block. He had gone there to report the incident. When officers asked him what happened, Boewe said he wasn’t going to speak until he spoke with his attorney.
Boewe did tell police that they were not in his house and that it was his neighbor’s house, police wrote in the affidavit. The neighbor, however, was back at his home tending to Boewe’s wife.
Neighbor’s Testimony and Response
The neighbor told police she heard a knock at her front door just before officers were dispatched at 10:06 a.m. When she opened the door, Boewe was standing on her front porch, and he said to her — in reference to his wife — that “it was either him or her, so he shot her,” the affidavit said.
The neighbor told Boewe to stay at her home, while she went to his home to check on Cathy. When she arrived to find Cathy wounded, she called 911, according to the affidavit. Cathy then told the neighbor that “he shot me” in reference to Boewe.
Victim’s Condition and Suspect’s Custody
Cathy was taken to the hospital in critical condition, police previously said. Her condition is unknown as of Friday morning.
As of Friday morning, Boewe remains in the Rockwall County jail with a bail amount set at $1 million, according to jail records. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
