Expansion in North Texas Grocery Market
Tom Thumb and Kroger are adding more stores to the mix in North Texas as grocers expand their presence in the increasingly competitive market.
Tom Thumb opened its newest store on Wednesday in Sunnyvale, located east of Dallas and north of 30. That followed the launch of a shop in Sangar, a city that’s north of Denton, according to an emailed statement.
Earlier this month, Kroger announced three new sites that are planned for the region, according to a company statement. They include Fate, which is roughly between Rockwall and Royse City, along with McKinney and a third locale that will be disclosed in the future.
New Store Locations
The two chains are adding to their lineups after recently pulling out of some locations. That included the closure of stores in Plano and Allen earlier this year for Tom Thumb, while Kroger exited sites in McKinney and Garland.
The new Tom Thumb in Sunnyvale is at 3400 N. Belt Line Road on the western side of the city. It covers nearly 60,000 square feet and offers tens of thousands of products while featuring a bakery, deli, floral and more, according to a statement.
There’s also an in-house Starbucks for coffee fans and a pharmacy.
The new store in Sangar is at 1413 W Chapman Drive and near I-35.
Competition in the Market
While some stores may fall out of favor, there’s plenty of new shops springing up around the region as companies try to woo more customers with additional sites. Tom Thumb and Kroger are competing against Walmart, Target and their continued efforts to get more of the local grocery dollar — along with the major addition in H-E-B, which has opened about 10 of its namesake stores in the region in recent years.
Kroger is expanding elsewhere, including a new site planned for Anna, among others sites.
“Kroger is working hard to keep pace with North Texas’ explosive population growth, ensuring communities have access to fresh, affordable groceries and essential items,” said Rudy DiPietro, president, Kroger’s Texas division in the statement announcing the three planned stores.
Customers reported finding the razor blades at a Walmart Supercenter and a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Biloxi.
Secondhand gifts had stigma once, but stores like Fort Worth’s Flipstone are changing that.
Grocer came to City Hall to do business and got lectures instead.
