Fire in West Oak Cliff Apartment Building
Firefighters rescued two people and one dog from an apartment building during a fire in west Oak Cliff on Wednesday morning, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans said.
Officials responded to reports of a fire at 2468 Bahama Drive at about 11:52 a.m. They arrived to see black smoke coming from a first-floor apartment, Evans said.
Firefighters received reports that people were still inside the building and quickly deployed attack teams and search and rescue.
Rescue Efforts
Upon entering the complex, firefighters found and extinguished a fire that originated near a closet, Evans said. The person who had been in that unit when the fire began was able to escape before DFR arrived.
Officials also found a woman sleeping inside her apartment, who they awakened as her apartment filled with smoke and assisted out.
Another resident was rescued from the balcony of an apartment that was also filling with smoke.
A third resident, who left the building before DFR arrived, was transported to a hospital after inhaling a lot of smoke.
Damage and Displacement
The complex had a total of eight units. Only one unit was damaged by the fire, but the others suffered significant smoke damage, Evans said.
Apartment management has enough units to accommodate the residents who will be displaced, according to officials.
