Jake Oettinger will be paying a little extra homage to the Dallas Stars’ lone Stanley Cup champion squad as the team unveils its newest uniforms Friday night.
As the Stars take the ice against the Utah Mammoth, donning threads featuring a legacy Stars logo with the team’s modern Victory green color scheme, Oettinger will be wearing a mask fit for an eagle.
Well, “The Eagle,” actually.
In addition to the current Stars goaltender’s traditional otter, a pair of eagles wings will also grace the sides of Oettinger’s helmet in honor of Ed Belfour.
The Inspiration Behind the New Uniforms
The Hall of Fame goalie who was known for the eagles painted on his masks was in between the pipes for all 23 games of the 1999 postseason, and made 53 saves in the Cup-clinching triple-overtime victory against Buffalo.
