High-Speed Chase and Drug Bust: Chicago Man Held on Multiple Charges
A High-Speed Chase Gone Wrong
A Chicago man, Kentrell Hayes, 25, of the Near West Side, was ordered held until trial after leading police on a nearly 100-mph chase in the early hours of Friday morning. The chase ended with a dramatic discovery of over 150 grams of illegal substances in his vehicle.
The Chase Begins
The incident started when Westmont police stopped Hayes for speeding early Friday morning. However, when the officer exited his squad car, Hayes fled, prompting Westmont police to give up the chase a short time later.
The Chase Continues
Around 1 a.m., Hinsdale police notified Oak Brook police that they had spotted a speeding Toyota matching the earlier description. Oak Brook police deployed "stop sticks" on northbound Route 83 near 31st Street, but Hayes drove over them and turned onto I-88. Oak Brook police continued chasing him at a speed of 95 mph until debris falling off his car forced them to stop.
A Chaotic Conclusion
Another Oak Brook police officer then took over the chase, pursuing Hayes onto I-290, where he crashed into a concrete barrier, causing the hood of his car to cover his windshield. He eventually exited I-290 near Austin Boulevard, where Forest Park police detained him.
The Discovery
A search of Hayes and his vehicle revealed a staggering amount of illegal substances. Officers found 108 bags containing approximately 149 grams of heroin and fentanyl, along with four bags holding two grams of cocaine and $1,620 in cash.
The Charges
Hayes faces two counts of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance, one count of manufacture and delivery of cocaine, and one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer.
Next Court Appearance
Hayes’ next court appearance is scheduled for March 17.
