Competition Highlights the Best of the Five Boroughs

New York City looks good enough to eat at a baking competition highlighting the best of the five boroughs. The 3rd annual "Gingerbread NYC: Borough Bake-off" competition is where 20 professional and amateur bakers from across the city battled to be the most iconic of NYC icons.

The Competition

The main challenge of the competition isn’t the baking part, but it’s putting pen to paper. Out of 20 competitors, only two represented the Bronx and Staten Island while the rest of the submissions came from the three other boroughs. The competition was fierce, with iconic New York City scenes at the show including the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Macy’s Flagship store, The Dakota, and realistic-looking pizza pies.

The Winners

The winner of the "most realistic" award is part-time baker, full-time surgeon Dr. Michael Wolfe who recreated the Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower. The overall winner and the most unique was Susanna Caliendo of Something Sugared and Mario Dibiase of SottoVoce, who teamed up to recreate the Wonder Wheel. They also won their borough, Brooklyn.

The Judges

Judges had their work cut out for them, with criteria including creativity, uniqueness, and realism. "I’m really looking for the best representation of the borough," said restauranteur Melba Wilson, one of the judges. "I’m looking for creativity, uniqueness and I’m looking at the line. I also want to know if the baker had a great time."

Conclusion

The "Gingerbread NYC: Borough Bake-off" competition is a holiday tradition that showcases the creativity and talent of bakers from across the city. With its unique and realistic gingerbread structures, the competition is a must-see for anyone who loves baking and New York City.
