Peak Foliage in Central Park: A Brief but Beautiful Season
Early Arrival of Fall Colors
Peak foliage has arrived in parts of Central Park earlier than expected this year, bringing out vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows in October instead of the typical November timeframe. More than 18,000 trees across the park are at or approaching peak fall color, according to the Central Park Conservancy.
What’s Causing the Early Foliage?
Cool nights combined with warm days have contributed to the premature peak, according to Lindsay Okarmus, director of the Central Park Conservancy’s Landscape Services. "The amount of sunlight does impact the leaf color change," she said.
Drought and the Perfect Conditions
The lack of measurable rain in October, which could become the first time New York City has gone an entire calendar month without rainfall since records began in 1860, has also played a role in the early foliage. This dry spell has helped to accelerate the peak.
Peaking Areas and Interactive Map
The Central Park Conservancy has an interactive map on their website, showcasing multiple sections of the park at peak levels more than a week ahead of schedule. These areas include Great Hill, the North Meadow, The Mall and Literary Walk, and the Hallett Nature Sanctuary in the southeastern portion of the park.

"We are definitely in the peak time here at Hallett," said Okarmus.
Don’t Miss Out
While procrastinators or those with busy schedules may worry they’ll miss the peak, Okarmus assures that there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the seasonal views. "There is still plenty of time to come out to the park — even what’s peak now should stay that way another week or two."
