The Campbell Soup Company Drops the Word "Soup" from its Name
New Era for the Iconic Brand
As we approach soup season, the Campbell Soup Company is dropping the soup. On September 10, the company held its Investor Day in New York City and announced its plans to rebrand as The Campbell’s Company.
A New Name for a New Era
The Campbell Soup Company, which has sold everything from vegetables, snacks, salsa, and soup over its 155-year history, has decided to drop the word "Soup" from its corporate name. The company’s president and CEO, Mark Clouse, describes this move as a "subtle yet important change" that retains the company’s iconic name recognition and reputation while better reflecting its full breadth of products.
A New Chapter for the Company
According to Clouse, the company has been on a transformative journey over the past five years, defining a new strategy, mission, and name. The name change is subject to shareholder approval at the company’s annual meeting in November.
A Legacy Preserved
A Campbell’s representative told TODAY.com that if approved, the company’s current web address, which still contains the word "soup," will also change. However, this change does not mean the company is forgetting its roots. "What better way to mark this next chapter than with a subtle, but meaningful change in the name of our company," Clouse said. "One that respects our heritage, but also reflects who we are today."
A Rich History
Interestingly, the Campbell Soup Company is not the original name of the company. In 1869, Abraham Anderson, a commercial canner and packer, and Joseph Campbell, a wholesale fruit and vegetable vendor, established the firm of Anderson & Campbell. The company would later become the Campbell Soup Company in 1922.
A Beyond Soup
Today, the company has many non-soup food and beverage brands under its umbrella, including Prego, Pace, Noosa, V8, Goldfish, Pepperidge Farm, and Cape Cod Chips. In August 2023, the company acquired the maker of Rao’s Homemade, Sovos Brands, for $2.7 billion.
