A New York middle school student was arrested and faces multiple child pornography-related felonies after allegedly being at the center of a sextortion scandal targeting his classmates.
Investigators in Rockland County launched an investigation in February after six students from Fieldstone Middle School told a school resource officer they were being coerced online.

Lead detective Andrew Kryger told NBC New York that the male victims were exchanging messages with a boy — pretending to be a girl — who asked for sexually explicit images.
"It turned into ‘Well, if you don’t send me more, I’m going to send these ones you sent to me to your friend group," said Kryger.
The student demanded gift cards under $100 as payment, according to Kryger. Investigators were surprised to find that the person exploiting children was a classmate.

Thus far, six children from the middle school have come forward as victims, according to Stony Point police — but investigators believe there could be hundreds of students targeted. Det. Kryger said there was "evidence of victims throughout the world."
Seven months after the investigation began, the student believed to be responsible faces three felony charges. The boy has not been identified by police due to his age.

"Our children are experiencing this type of harassment and sextortion over the internet and we didn’t experience this growing up throughout our own childhood," said Dr. Hersha Diaz. "It’s really important for us to listen deeply."
