The New Italian American Museum
A Legacy of Tradition and Contributions
In 1999, Dr. Joseph V. Scelsa felt the need to create a dedicated space to showcase the history of Italian Americans. After a successful temporary exhibit at the New-York Historical Society, Scelsa opened the Italian American Museum in 2008 at the former Banca Stabile building in Little Italy.
A New Chapter Begins
Fast forward to 2018, construction began on a new, six-story building at 155 Mulberry Street, marking the dawn of a new era for the Italian American Museum. The new building is now home to various exhibits, including:

- Sicilian Puppet Theater: This exhibit features puppets from the former Manteo Theater, dating back to the 1920s and 1930s.
- Italian Americans in the Clothing Industry: This exhibit highlights the significant contributions of Italian Americans to the clothing industry.
- Giovanni da Verrazzano’s Journeys: This exhibit showcases the adventures of the Italian explorer who sailed to the New World in the 16th century.
A Path of Pride
As the museum’s president, Scelsa expressed his pride in the Italian American community’s achievements, stating, "It has not always been easy but we have much to be proud of, for our contributions to American society are enormous. Now we will have a secular cathedral for all to see, experience and appreciate where we came from and what we have achieved."
Grand Opening and Future Plans
To mark the occasion, the museum hosted an opening event on October 1, attended by representatives Jerry Nadler and Kathy Hochul, who secured $1 million in state funding in 2022. Fabrizio Di Michele, Consul General of Italy in New York, also attended, recognizing the museum’s importance in celebrating the Italian American community’s rich cultural heritage and significant contributions.
