Disaster Relief Efforts and Election Reminders on Empire State Weekly

Disaster Aid: A Call to Action for Fellow Americans

The southern United States suffered significant damage and loss of life following the powerful hurricanes Milton and Helene. In response, New York state sent aid to hard-hit areas like North Carolina and Florida as part of disaster relief efforts. In an interview on Empire State Weekly, Terence O’Leary, Executive Deputy Commissioner for the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, emphasized the importance of unity in the face of disaster.

"A disaster doesn’t care who you vote for, it doesn’t care where you live. It can pop up anywhere, it can happen to anybody. So when we show up, we’re just there to do the mission," O’Leary said. "We’re not asking who you are, we don’t care who you are. We just want to help our fellow Americans."

Election Reminders

As the November 5 election approaches, the League of Women Voters’ Executive Director, Erica Smitka, emphasized the importance of voter preparation. Smitka stressed the need to verify registration status and find polling locations, as well as familiarizing oneself with the ballot.

"Make sure you’re registered to vote. There are a lot of folks who think they’re registered, maybe they’ve moved, or it’s been a few years since they voted. But go online to the Board of Elections website, they have a great tool – a voter lookup tool – that you can see if you’re registered to vote," Smitka said. "And the other most important thing is to know where your poll site is."
