Below the Bruckner Expressway, a Community Group Transforms an Unused Lot into a Public Space

Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) has launched the Soundview Economic Hub, a temporary public plaza on Bronx River Avenue beneath the Bruckner Expressway. The 7,500 square feet of space, previously unused for decades, is now open from sunrise to sunset and is the first phase of a larger plan to revitalize 30,000 square feet of public space.

Everybody Has a Life and a Story in The Bronx

Visitors enjoyed a range of activities, including art exhibitions, food, and bookstores. Seven wooden structures displayed 14 pieces of art, capturing what it means to hail from or live in the Bronx. One piece, created by Bronxite Suki Watashi, features white tears with holes, symbolizing the unique stories and experiences of Bronx residents.

Roadside Revitalization

The new plaza is part of YMPJ’s efforts to revitalize the area, supported by the Local Center and the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development. The $1.7 billion Hunts Point Access Improvement Project helped prepare the space for public use, reducing congestion, adding parking spots, and making streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

Community Involvement

Councilmember Rafael Salamanca Jr. praised the revitalization efforts, saying, "And so we revitalized the space, cleaned it up. Now we’re taking back our streets. We’re taking back dirty land, and we’re converting it into a space that the community can utilize."

Future Plans

YMPJ is working to fundraise $6 million to revitalize an additional 22,500 square feet as public space. The group plans to complete a feasibility study by the end of the year to identify what’s permissible and what’s not.
