Introduction to the Ceasefire Agreement
The Capital Region’s Ukrainian community has been closely following the recent developments in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. (NEWS10) -“My father-in-law was killed two years ago. It is very difficult. I know that some people are coming in the morning Sunday and crying here because they did not hear a word from them week, two weeks, three weeks, or even a month,” described Pastor Vasyl Dovgan of the Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Concerns and Reactions
Father Dovgan had been praying for Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to agree on a 30-day ceasefire. Ukrainian Americans here in the Capital Region worry about the safety of family and friends in Ukraine: both those fighting on the front lines and civilians injured and killed in cities far from the battlefront.
But as a member of the Ukrainian American Cultural Center, Lesia Shuldak says they can’t completely trust Russia’s word. “Knowing history, reading books, it has happened a lot before. We’ve been through many peace agreements.”
Involvement of Ukrainian President
Both Shuldak and Father Dovgan told NEWS10’s Anthony Krolikowski that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should also be present in these conversations. He had agreed to a ceasefire last week. “It’s absolutely necessary to have a ceasefire to sit at the table and talk,” stated Shuldak.

Fears and Uncertainties
But the fear is what happens if Russia breaks yet another agreement? “Either gain the peace or gain more power to bring more heavy equipment to the front lines. To bring more people or so. It depends what is the goal,” explained Father Dovgan.
