A suspect is dead after a police-involved shooting at a Home Depot on Staten Island early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Incident Details

According to law enforcement officials, the incident occurred at around 5:19 a.m. in the Bricktown Commons shopping plaza, located at 2750 Veterans Rd. W. in the normally quiet neighborhood of Charleston. Officers from the 123rd Precinct responded to a 911 call of a man with a gun who was sitting in a black Jeep Wrangler near the Home Depot.

Police Response

Just as police approached the scene, they heard multiple shots being fired. The suspect, a 55-year-old man, allegedly brandished the gun when the officers surrounded him and repeatedly told him to drop the weapon. Officers from the 123rd Precinct, the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division, the Emergency Service Unit (ESU), and Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

Use of Force

The suspect did not comply with the officers’ instructions and then pointed his weapon at the officers. Five officers shot at the suspect, shooting him numerous times, according to Assistant Chief Melissa Eger, Staten Island’s borough commanding officer. The officers had tactically positioned themselves around their police vehicles and had repeatedly instructed the suspect to drop his hands and drop his firearm, which is confirmed on body-worn camera footage.

Recovery of Evidence

A Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver, shell casings, and live ammunition were recovered at the scene.

Outcome

The officers performed CPR on the suspect and rushed him to Staten Island University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Statement from Assistant Chief Eger

"Our officers ran toward gunfire and bravely confronted danger," Eger said. "No officers were injured in the incident. It is unclear right now what may have led to the shooting."
