Since 1903, Glens Falls Hospital has had thousands of people volunteer in their hallways. A new and evolving aspect of their volunteer program is the addition of musicians. These volunteers play for patients, visitors, and employees in common spaces, and privately for patients, with a variety of instruments being used, from the mandolin to the guitar.

According to Director of Volunteer Services and Amanda’s House at Glens Falls Hospital, Tom Lyons, “We’re just building out a foundation, a long-term tradition that Glens Falls Hospital has had for over 100 years of volunteerism in our community. Music is bringing some joy, maybe a pleasant distraction for those that maybe come to the hospital for a difficult reason.”

Tiffany Guay, a former patient who now volunteers, plays the mandolin in the hospital’s Cancer Center waiting room. She emphasizes, “Everyone should, sometime in their life, take the opportunity to volunteer because there’s no better gift you can give than your time. It’s needed.”

The hospital’s pet therapy program is also very popular with patients and employees, according to Lyons. This is evident with the volunteer duo, Jeff and Cooper, who were introduced by NEWS10 in 2023.
