Amtrak Announces Temporary Extension of Service

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Amtrak will be extending its Empire Service between Albany and New York City, the company announced on Thursday. The lines, which carried over two million passengers last year, were first restored in December to accommodate holiday travel after service cuts were announced in October 2024.

New Schedule and Service Additions

The current Empire Service schedule will be in place through Sunday, April 27. Amtrak’s new spring schedule will go into effect on April 28 and will feature 10 round trips between the Capital Region and New York City.

Modernizing Infrastructure

“Amtrak is committed to providing the best possible service to our Empire Service customers while we begin our critical work on the East River Tunnel used in this service,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “These significant upgrades will modernize critical infrastructure and ensure long-term improvements to the Empire Service and other Amtrak and commuter services for a better customer experience and more reliable trip.”

Additional Car Additions and Repairs

28 trains from New York City to Albany and Niagara Falls will have an additional car added each week to offer more seating. The new schedule will allow crews to make repairs to the East River Tunnel in a rehabilitation project that is expected to last around three years.
