EPA-Funded Water Line to Connect South Cairo to Village of Catskill’s Water Supply

Project Timeline and Details

Local municipalities have been working together to find a solution to connect South Cairo to the Village of Catskill’s water supply, which has been affected by chemicals dumped by the decades-closed American Thermostat plant. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced funding to make this connection a reality.

Phase 1: Connecting Country Estates

The first phase of construction, which will focus on connecting Country Estates to the water pipeline, is expected to cost around $650,000. According to EPA Regional Site Manager Claudia Shuman, this phase will be followed by Phase 2. "That loop around Scotch Rock Road down to McLaren Road back to Route 23B and then down to the Country Estates terminus, that’s about $3.7 million."

Phase 2: Connecting the Remaining Areas

Catskill Town Supervisor Patrick McCulloch estimates that construction on Phase 2, which includes the areas along Scotch Rock Road, McLaren Road, and Route 23B, should be completed within two years. "By August of this year and then obviously phase two, it’s a bigger portion: Scotch Rock and the rest of 23B. I would imagine that should be done within two years," he said.
