New York State Launches New Tree Tracking Tools for 25 Million Trees Initiative

Tracking Progress towards a Greener New York

New York State has launched two new interactive tools for recording and tracking trees planted throughout the state, Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday. Developed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Office of Information Technology Services, the initiative comes as the state pushes towards a goal to plant 25 million trees by 2033.

The Tree Tracker

The first of the tools, called the “Tree Tracker,” will allow users – state agencies, organizations, private entities, and individuals – to record the number and location of any trees they plant. Entries can also include information like planting date(s), tree species, and tree size.

Interactive Map

The accompanying tool, a webpage, has an interactive map of planting projects throughout New York. Planted trees are tallied by region, county, and municipality so that users can track how many trees are being planted and where. The webpage also includes information on how to plant trees and how to best take care of them.

Governor’s Statement

“New York is taking decisive action to protect our environment and strengthen communities’ ability to withstand severe weather,” said Governor Hochul in a press release. “Our progress towards the 25 Million Tree goal is a testament to the power of community-driven action, and the new Tree Tracker will make it easier for New Yorkers to track our progress, share updates, and contribute to a healthier environment for the future.”

Tree Planting Initiatives

In addition to the Tree Tracker, the DEC has also opened its annual seedling sale, which runs through May 14. The Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery sells low-cost, New York-grown tree and shrub seedlings. These initiatives aim to encourage statewide tree planting to conserve and restore New York’s forests, as well as build the state’s forest products industry, contributing to the state’s larger goals of promoting sustainability and mitigating climate change.

Conclusion

The new webpage and Tree Tracker can be found on the DEC website. To order a bundle of seedlings from the DEC’s seedling sale, visit the DEC Spring Seedling Sale webpage.
