Bird Flu Case Confirmed at Ulster County Farm

Positive Case Reported, 48 Ducks and Chickens Killed

The Ulster County Health Department has confirmed a farm within Ulster County has a positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as HPAI, H5N1 or Bird Flu. The positive case reportedly killed 48 of the 50 ducks and chickens on the farm; two were euthanized to prevent a further spread.

Low Risk to Humans, but Precautions Recommended

According to Governor Kathy Hochul, although the disease can spread quickly between birds and poultry, the risk to humans is low. In the Ulster County case, contact with the animals was limited by the owners and a veterinarian, but they will remain under surveillance for symptoms.

“At my direction, New York State is continuing to monitor for HPAI and take proactive measures to keep our communities safe,” Governor Hochul said. “While the risk to public health remains low, I encourage all New Yorkers, especially individuals frequently in contact with poultry and wild birds, to remain vigilant and take the necessary steps to protect our state.”

Precautions for Residents and Farmers

Ulster County Public Health Director Eve Walter echoed Governor Hochul, and suggested residents should avoid handling a sick or dead bird, wild or domestic.

“People working with poultry should consider wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in close proximity to the birds,” said Ulster County Public Health Director Eve Walter. “All residents should avoid handling a wild or domestic sick or dead bird. The Ulster County Department of Health communicable disease staff is in direct contact with individuals potentially exposed to this confirmed case of avian influenza. If you or someone you know has questions or is concerned about a potential exposure, please call an Ulster County Department of Health communicable disease nurse at 845-340-3070.”

Other Positive Cases in New York and Massachusetts

There have been other positive cases in both Suffolk and Putnam Counties as well as in Massachusetts.

Hochul said there have been positive cases in poultry on a farm in Suffolk County and in several wild and domestic birds at a learning center in Putnam County. In Massachusetts, the positive cases are in Canada geese, swans, and other birds in Plymouth.

Precautions for Milk and Dairy Cattle

As a precaution, milk and dairy cattle are also being tested for a potential outbreak. According to Hochul, these orders continue to remain in place until further notice.

Conclusion

The New York State Department of Health will continue to monitor these detections in animals, including livestock and poultry, to assess any potential risks to public health and safety. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their communities.
