Introduction to the Demolition

Richard Gere’s old house has been demolished. The $11 million New Canaan, Connecticut property that Gere, 76, and his wife, Alejandra Silva, previously owned is no longer standing, according to Hudson Valley House Parts founder Reggie Young.

The 32-acre site is reportedly now being used to construct a nine-property development by the new owners. The 8,800-square-foot mansion had six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, three powder rooms and multiple fireplaces. The property also featured a separate 2,400-square-foot guest house, a pond, a pool and a courtyard.

The Demolition Process

“We recently checked in and the house has been taken down,” Young told People on Sunday. The outlet also obtained a picture of the demolished property.

“We are grateful that the buyers allowed us time to salvage and get everything out,” Young added.

Architectural Pieces Salvaged

Young also confirmed that the architectural pieces from inside the house are at Hudson Valley House Parts’ New Jersey location “and will eventually find homes where they are reused.”

History of the Property

Gere sold the house for $10.75 million in an off-market deal to real estate developers in October 2024. Gere and Silva initially bought their Connecticut home for $10.8 million in 2022 from legendary singer Paul Simon, who paid $16.5 million for it in 2002 with his wife, Edie Brickell.

Drama Surrounding the Sale

After Gere’s sale last year, Simon’s daughter, Lulu Simon, slammed the actor and claimed he vowed to “take care” of her childhood home when he purchased it.

“Alejandra was very generous in giving me six years of living in my world, so it’s only fair that I give her at least another six years of living in hers,” Gere shared during an interview with Vanity Fair Spain in April 2024.
