Franciscan Founded Siena College Pays Tribute to Pope Francis

Introduction to the Tribute

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Francis was the first pope to take the name of Saint Francis of Assisi. On Wednesday afternoon, people at Siena College — which was founded by Franciscan Friars — held a prayer service for the late pontiff.

“Where there is injury your pardon Lord, and where there is doubt, true faith in you" sang students, staff, and priests. They sang the words of St. Francis’ prayer.

The Significance of Pope Francis’ Name

History professor, Father Daniel Dwyer, is a friar under the Franciscan order. He says the pope honored that order of his name sake St. Francis.
“One of the key things there is being in touch with people, particularly the marginalized people, poor people," said Dwyer.

Personal Encounters with Pope Francis

One speaker recalled previously meeting Pope Francis.
“One of the things you learned at Siena is that you gotta know a guy. We knew a guy, and he got us in to see the pope," he said. “…As he came around and greeted each of us one at a time, and he took our hand. He looked in your eyes and you were the only person in the world when he was talking to you," he added.

Impact on the Younger Generation

The pope’s teachings were not lost on the younger generation. Siena Freshman Kyle Carney was touched by the pope’s message of environmentalism. “He was a big advocate for climate change and just making the world a more sustainable place" Carney recalled.
