Introduction to Operation Refresh
Overview of the Program
TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Monday was the first day of a joint operation by public agencies in Troy to help improve the city’s quality of life. The program is called Operation Refresh, it aims to beautify Troy’s streets.
From the washers, to the sweepers, crews were at work on Monday. “Street by street, alley by alley, just cleaning up debris yard materials” said Joe Martin, Troy’s DPW Street Supervisor.
The Cleaning Process
Scope of the Operation
“We literally scraped from curb to curb in the past. Alleyways weren’t hit, we hit alleyways also. Our sweeper comes through, three times. We’re picking up the garbage" said Mayor Carmella Mantello.
This is a joint operation by Troy’s Quality of Life Action Force, comprising multiple agencies like the Community Police, Fire Department and Codes Department.
Goals and Impact
Improving Quality of Life
This all hands on deck effort is more than just removing the ring around the collar — city that is, Mayor Mantello says it’s part of a bigger picture: improving Troy’s quality of life.
“If you have a block where you’re seeing garbage, you’re seeing illegal dumping, you can’t even get down the alleyway, and that’s what was happening prior. Now, people are taking pride in their neighborhood, they’re starting to see something say something” said Mantello.
Participation and Support
Resident Cooperation
The city wants residents to move their cars and posted signs on streets where parking would be temporarily restricted on certain days for cleaning. According to Troy is also offering free bulk trash drop offs at the Alamo on Friday, April 11th, and Saturday May 3rd from 9:00am – 1:00pm. Operation refresh continues through May 23.
