A woman is in critical condition Monday afternoon after a deranged man stabbed her in the neck on a SoHo street with a piece of glass, police reported.

The suspected attacker was apprehended moments after the assault, which occurred near the corner of Wooster and Broome Streets at about 3:04 p.m. on April 7. The attack occurred within the confines of the 1st Precinct.
Police said the incident unfolded with an assault on another woman minutes earlier. According to NYPD Assistant Chief James McCarthy, a 29-year-old woman was walking eastbound on Broome Street toward Wooster when the man came up behind her and whacked her over the back with a bottle.
The victim fled uninjured, but the attacker was not done there. He grabbed a shard of the smashed glass and hunted for a second victim.
The Second Victim
“He encountered another female, 25 years old, where unfortunately, as he was walking by her, in an unprovoked attack, he slashed her in the neck with a broken bottle, causing a serious injury,” McCarthy said. “The woman was removed to Bellevue Hospital, where she is now undergoing surgery.”
One eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said he saw the attacker use the shard of glass from the broken bottle to stab her in the neck.

“She did not look good. She was bleeding from the neck and was pale as she was put in the ambulance,” the eyewitness said.
Response to the Attack
A security guard at the scene, who asked not to be identified, ran to the woman’s aid after hearing her scream.
“All I heard was her screaming,” said the security guard, who then got to work with other New Yorkers helping the bleeding woman before police and EMS arrived.
“I’m trained for retail theft, but personally, I’m trained for other stuff,” the guard said. “So it’s just it could be anybody, daughter, sister. I’m here to help anybody. It makes no difference who you are.”

The NYPD has sealed off the entire block as detectives investigate the incident.
“We’re praying that she comes out of surgery and that she is going to make a recovery,” McCarthy added.
