FASNY Kicks Off Annual Recruitment Campaign
The Firefighters Association of the State of New York kicked off its 16th annual recruitment campaign to urge New Yorkers to join local fire departments across the state. FASNY representatives said the past several years have been challenging for volunteer fire departments throughout the state.
The Challenge Facing Volunteer Fire Departments
Many are faced with decreased membership and increased call volume. There are about 80,000 volunteer firefighters statewide, which is roughly 40,000 less than it was 20 years ago.
Lending a Helping Hand
But officials said there is more than one way to lend a helping hand.
"One of the unique things about a volunteer fire department is that you can provide many different functions," FASNY Sec. John D’Alessandro said. "You don’t have to be the person on the other end of a hose line putting out a structure fire. If you have a skill, if you’re a bookkeeper, if you’re a mechanic, if you’re a handyman, we would love to take that time that you have and put it to good use."
Getting Involved
If you’re interested in volunteering, you’re asked to stop by your local fire department for RecruitNY on April 26 or April 27. They will be hosting recruitment events and provide more information on how to get involved.
