Winter Storm Wreaks Havoc in Amsterdam and Montgomery County

Sheriff Jeff Smith Issues State of Emergency

Before and during the state of emergency in Montgomery County, NEWS10’s Anthony Krolikowski drove around Amsterdam to check in with the local community.

Emergency Response Efforts

“We’ve handled 26 motor vehicle accidents. We’ve had 12 vehicles that have been stuck in snow drifts or snow banks. Seven trees down. Three power lines down and there’s about 400 customers without power right now in the county,” listed Sheriff Jeff Smith.

One of those trees landed on a shed at Midline Road. Thankfully, no one was hurt in any of these accidents.

Message from Sheriff Smith

Stay off the roads and avoid any unnecessary travel because any north, south road in the county is absolutely inundated with heavy snow drifts and whiteout conditions,” Sheriff Smith urged.

Resident Perspective

Residents like Mike Bubniak took the sheriff’s words to heart. He’s been holding down the fort since Sunday morning. “Once the wind got here, look out. Everything froze over. If you hadn’t shoveled anything by then, you were stuck with a mess,” Bubniak said.

Plowing Efforts

Just like Mike, plows have also been doing their part around the county. “Cut them a little bit of slack to and realize they’ve been working hard since Saturday afternoon,” stated Sheriff Smith. “If it does continue, the lake-effect snow, till Wednesday, they got a rough couple days ahead of them.”

Community Reflections

“Every other weekend we’re getting like three, four inches of snow and this has probably tested everybody to the max,” described Bubniak. To anyone else shoveling snow, he recommends bundling up, staying hydrated, and once you’re done, drinking a warm cup of coffee.
