Albany AAA Driver Recounts Near Collision
A Near Miss on South Main Street
The video from Wednesday showed a black vehicle speeding past the tow truck driver on South Main Street near Amherst Avenue in Albany.
A Close Call
“What happened was I basically stepped out of the vehicle and as I was approaching the back of the deck and the customer, I noticed the vehicle had come up over the top of the hill. I did recognize that it was moving a little too quickly. When I looked up again, I actually noticed he was swerving towards me again, so the only thing I basically had to do is jump on the truck to get out of the way,” Harvey recalled.
A Familiar Scenario
He was calm about the situation because he said it’s deja vu.
“Unfortunately, it’s not the first time,” said Harvey. “Whether it be police, EMTs, tow trucks, you know, we’re all exposed to that kind of reckless behavior.”
A Call to Action
And that’s why Harvey wanted to share his story before another driver gets hit.
“It’s unfortunate that when this comes out it only shows itself when someone gets seriously hurt or killed,” said Harvey. “We’re all responsible for ourselves but we’re responsible for each other. You know there’s a lot of people who work on the side of the road whether it be police EMTs, fire, tow trucks. Driving is a privilege, not a guaranteed right,” the driver added.
Reporting the Incident
On Thursday, Harvey said he intended to file a police report about the incident. As of this report, the driver has yet to be identified.
New Technology to Help Prevent Similar Incidents
AAA Hudson Valley says they’ve bought a new system that alerts drivers to their roadside workers via mapping apps like Google and Waze.
Conclusion
It’s essential for drivers to be aware of the risks and take extra precautions to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. By being vigilant and responsible, we can prevent incidents like this near-miss and ensure a safer driving environment for all.
