New Era for Christian Brothers Academy Boys Basketball

New Coach Takes the Reins

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) — After over 25 years of leading the Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) boys basketball team, Dave Doemel stepped down last season. The new era has begun, and Galal Cancer has taken over, bringing with him a wealth of experience and knowledge gained from his playing days under Doemel.

A Familiar Face

Cancer has a strong connection to CBA, having led the team to three straight section titles from 2009-2011, including a state title in his junior season. He then went on to play at Cornell and Kent State. This is a dream come true for Cancer, who never expected to become the varsity coach at just 12 years old.

"It’s a great feeling. I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity. I’m looking forward to it as the years go on," Cancer said.

Lessons from Doemel

As Cancer takes over, he has the support of his former coach, who he considers the best coach he has ever known. "He’s somebody who I consider the best coach. Everything that I’ve learned from start to finish, and I’m still learning from him till this day," Cancer said. Doemel’s advice is to be true to oneself and bring one’s own unique style to the program. "It’s always be yourself. I’ve worked very hard at what I do. I’m very, very serious when it comes to the game. It’s always been, be yourself. If I have questions, I’m able to ask. Seek guidance when I need it. So again, I’m just out here doing what I do every day, something that I love," Doemel advised.

Looking Ahead

The Brothers will look to move to 2-0 at Rome Free Academy on Sunday.
