Special Election in New York’s 21st Congressional District: Candidates and Issues at Stake

Speculation Surrounds Candidates for Special Election

After President-elect Trump nominated Elise Stefanik as well as other New York lawmakers to positions in his cabinet, speculation has been rife about who will run to fill the vacated position in New York’s 21st Congressional district. The special election is expected to attract a lot of national attention, but the voters who will ultimately decide the outcome will have a different focus, according to Morgan Hook, the Managing Director for SKDK.

Local Issues Take Center Stage

Hook believes that the special election will draw a lot of national attention, but the voters will be focused on local issues that matter to them. "This special election is probably going to get a lot of national attention, but for the voters who are actually voting, I think they’re going to be paying attention to local issues, they’re going to be paying attention to what people have to say about the issues that actually matter to them because those are the people who are going to be voting at the end of the day," said Hook.

Tax Credits and Subsidies Under Scrutiny

Meanwhile, a recent public hearing examined the impact of an independent study into the generous tax credits the state gives to entice businesses to do business in the state. State Senator James Skoufis, a democrat representing the 42nd District, was part of the hearing and expressed his concerns about the effectiveness of these tax credits.

Subpar Return on Investment

Skoufis stated that the film tax credit, for example, only returns 31 cents for every dollar invested in the program, which is woefully inadequate. He believes that the state should be more judicious in its use of tax credits and subsidies, and should focus on safeguarding taxpayer interests.
