Malt Drive Park

Must read

The Long Island City Waterfront Just Got a Little Larger with Malt Drive Park

The Long Island City waterfront has recently undergone a transformation with the opening of a new network of parks and public space called Malt Drive Park. This project was led by TF Cornerstone and SCAPE Landscape Architecture, and it spans along the Newtown Creek at Hunter’s Point South, bordering Brooklyn.

A New Green Space for the Community

Malt Drive Park was once home to a beer distribution center, but it has been transformed into a beautiful green space, complete with new residential buildings, including two and three towers. The South building, 2-20 Malt Drive, is now open for leasing, offering 575 apartments, with 173 set aside for an affordable housing lottery. The neighboring building, 2-21 Malt Drive, will start leasing its spaces later this year, featuring 811 apartments, with 244 available through the affordable housing lottery.

The Park’s Features

While Malt Drive Park is primarily designed for residential use, the surrounding green space is open to the public. Some of its notable features include:

  • Concrete blocks and other design elements that mitigate the risk of flooding
  • Habitat growth-promoting features

These unique features ensure that the park is not only aesthetically pleasing but also sustainable and functional.

Celebrate the Park’s Opening

Want to celebrate the opening of one of the city’s newest green spaces? Head to the block party on November 16 from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Newtown Creek Development

As the mouth of the creek is experiencing significant development, it’s likely to attract more foot traffic, making the area safer and more accessible to the community. However, the recent discovery of bodies in the creek, particularly in the industrial zone near Bushwick, has raised concerns about the creek’s safety and environmental impact.
