Refortified Vessel Reopens

Must read

Welcome Back, Vessel!

Hudson Yards’ Iconic Vertical Sculpture and Sightseeing Platform Reopens to the Public

After more than three years, the Vessel at Hudson Yards is finally reopening to the public. The iconic vertical sculpture and sightseeing platform will be a hive of activity once again, offering stunning views of the city and a unique, maze-like experience for visitors.

A New Era of Safety and Security

The Vessel was closed in August 2021 after four tragic deaths by suicide. However, a redesign was undertaken by Hudson Yards developer Related Companies and designer Thomas Heatherwick, resulting in a safer and more secure structure. The new design includes floor-to-ceiling steel mesh screens on every floor above the second except for the top one, where a ceiling doesn’t exist. This added safety measure has been achieved while preserving the sculptural integrity and architectural design of the Vessel.

Preserving the Experience

The result is a structure that is both safe and impressive. The spidery, protective mesh is almost invisible from less than 100 feet away, allowing visitors to appreciate the stunning views without obstruction. As shown on a recent tour led by Hudson Yards’ chief operating officer Andrew Rosen, the Vessel’s maze of interlocked stairways and platforms remains as exciting as ever.

What’s Open, What’s Closed

However, not all of the 80 landings and 154 flights of stairs are currently open to the public. The uptown-facing side of the Vessel above the second level is temporarily closed, but the views from the south side remain unobstructed. The first and second floors are fully open, without mesh barriers, and offer the best views.

Admission and Discounts

Admission to the Vessel is $10, same as before the closure. New York City residents who show proof of residency can enjoy free admission on Thursdays.

Conclusion

After a long wait, the Vessel at Hudson Yards is once again ready to be explored and admired. With its unique design and breathtaking views, this iconic structure is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in art, architecture, or simply experiencing the best of New York City.
