Local Game Developers Return to 1UpState
ALBANY, N.Y. – 1UpState returned to Albany for its second year, bringing together developers from across the Capital Region to showcase their latest games.
From Hobbyists to Professionals, 1UpState Attracts a Diverse Group of Game Developers
"We have all different types of levels here. From hobbyists, to students, to professional developers, and we’re all coming to the Albany Capital Center to share these experiences and put forth what we’ve created," said Anthony Rossi, Event Manager of 1UpState.
Game Demos Showcase Creativity and Innovation
Local developers displayed their best and latest work, eager to get feedback from excited players. One game demo that stood out was "The Songbird Guild", which many attendees found too fun to put down.
Feedback is Valued by Developers
"I’ve been having a problem with people staying too long when other people are trying to get a turn," said Tess Wainwright, Writer and Programmer at Yurisoft. "I think that’s probably the best feedback you can get."
Not Just for Big Budgets – Small Teams Can Make a Big Impact
Not every game has a huge team or large budget behind it. Polyhedron Productions, for example, is making a small game called "Keepin’ it Reel" for the small Playdate handheld console. "It could just be a group of friends who got together, have an idea, put something together for fun, and then go, ‘No, there’s more to it. Let’s pursue it,"" said C.J. Kershner, Studio Head.
A Balance of Fun and Career
For 2024, 1UpState has expanded its offerings beyond just video games. The event now includes board game playtesting and a financial workshop for small business owners. "So, one of the things that we came up with was adding the board game playtesting, a financial workshop for small business owners. So, we are expanding the programming for year two and hope to keep that growth moving forward," described Rossi.
Conclusion
1UpState is an event that celebrates the creativity and innovation of local game developers, providing a platform for them to showcase their work and receive feedback. As the event continues to grow, it’s exciting to see how it will evolve and adapt to the changing gaming landscape.
