Vanessa Walker’s world was turned upside down when her husband, John, was diagnosed with stage four cancer at just 43 years old. Despite being a world-class athlete and representing Team USA on the world stage just weeks before his diagnosis, John’s cancer had progressed too far and unfortunately, he lost his battle a few months later.<\/p>\n
Vanessa recalled, “When you’re diagnosed with cancer in South Florida, you have hope because there’s Sylvester. In John’s case, it was too far gone. We didn’t have the proper testing. We didn’t have the proper diagnosis. We didn’t find out he had cancer until he walked into the emergency room too late.”<\/p>\n
For Vanessa, the Dolphins’ Annual Cancer Challenge is not just about the race or the ride; it’s about highlighting the importance of the Sylvester Comprehensive Center in their community and fundraising for the critical care and research that can make a difference in countless lives.<\/p>\n
To honor her late husband’s legacy, Vanessa is not only participating in the event but also fundraising for the Dolphins Cancer Challenge. She has put together a team of 11 people, the John A. Walker Legacy team, with a goal to raise $15,000. They are almost there.<\/p>\n
Vanessa’s hope is that people can be healthy and cancer-free with the medical advancements and state-of-the-art treatments available at Sylvester.
