Miami coach Erik Spoelstra was caught off-guard in a joyous locker room after the Heat beat the Milwaukee Bucks in an NBA Cup game. Water bottles were getting dumped on him from all angles, and he had no idea what was happening.<\/p>\n
The water-pourers wanted to celebrate his 800th career win. Spoelstra had no idea he had reached this milestone. \u201cI was very confused,\u201d Spoelstra said Wednesday night. \u201cI was calculating that maybe we\u2019ve qualified for the Cup. Then I\u2019m looking around and nobody else is getting water dumped on them, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Wait a minute \u2014 what\u2019s going on here?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
That was when Spoelstra learned of the milestone. He\u2019s the 17th coach in NBA history to win that many games and only the third to do it with one team, joining San Antonio\u2019s Gregg Popovich and Utah\u2019s Jerry Sloan. \u201cIt hasn\u2019t sunk in yet because I wasn\u2019t aware of it. It\u2019s fitting that it comes on the eve of Thanksgiving,\u201d Spoelstra said.<\/p>\n
Spoelstra expressed his gratitude for the organization and his love for coaching. \u201cI just feel incredible gratitude for this organization and all of these years. I\u2019m having a hell of a time. I love what I do, I love coaching, I love this profession, I love working for this organization, I love working for \u2014 and with \u2014 amazing players and staff.\u201d The milestone comes a few weeks after Spoelstra lost his home to a massive fire. His children were not there at the time, and Spoelstra was returning home from a road trip when the fire started.<\/p>\n
Heat guard Tyler Herro praised Spoelstra’s achievement, saying, \u201cIt\u2019s huge. I\u2019m trying to think of how old I was when Spo probably got his first one and then to be where he is now \u2014 he\u2019s got 800 of them \u2014 is insane,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s great to be a part of a great organization who\u2019s historically been one of the top.\u201d The Heat haven’t missed a beat; they\u2019re 13-6 this season, third-best in the Eastern Conference.<\/p>\n
Erik Spoelstra’s 800th win is a significant milestone in his coaching career. Despite the challenges he has faced, including the recent loss of his home, Spoelstra remains dedicated to his profession and grateful for the opportunity to work with an amazing team.<\/p>\n
