\nThey haven\u2019t spoken in a few days, he said kiddingly.
\nBut hey, it\u2019s Masters week, and the Hall of Fame baseball player simply couldn\u2019t pass up the rare opportunity to work as a photographer for Masters.com, taking pictures of golf\u2019s biggest stars like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Phil Mickelson on perhaps the sport\u2019s most picturesque stage.
\nA star shooting stars, if you will.
\n\u201cI\u2019m not here to take anybody\u2019s job, but I am here to learn about as much as I can about sports photography as well as the history of the Masters,\u201d Griffey said. \u201cTo be able to sit here and really soak it in for four or five days has really been absolutely unbelievable.\u201d

\nThe 55-year-old Griffey, a 13-time All-Star, said he\u2019s a late bloomer when it comes to sports photography.
\nHe started when his children got into sports.
\n\u201cPeople would think if I\u2019m sitting in the stands smiling, they can come up and talk to me,\u201d Griffey said with a laugh. \u201cSo if I got a camera, they didn\u2019t really know what I was doing. It was a way for me to really focus in and watch the kids, and not critique what they were doing, but just be in the moment with them.\u201d<\/p>\n
He\u2019s since taken it to a different level.
\nGriffey has shot the World Series, the All-Star game, NFL games and soccer \u2014 not to mention driving the pace car during his trip to the Indy 500 last year. This is Junior\u2019s first time shooting golf, though he\u2019s played Augusta National once before.
\n(He\u2019ll modestly tell you his handicap is 13, but some close to him say it\u2019s much closer to scratch.)
\n\u201cI think I\u2019m probably best at shooting baseball because I understand it so well,\u201d said Griffey, who played 22 big league seasons with four teams and finished with 2,781 hits, a career .284 batting average and 630 home runs. He also won 10 Gold Gloves as an outfielder.
\n\u201cFootball, too,\u201d he added.
\nGriffey has all of his own photography equipment, including the long telephoto lenses.
\nWhen he first became immersed in the hobby, Griffey phoned former Seattle Mariners teammate Randy Johnson for some advice. He knew \u201cThe Big Unit\u201d had taken photojournalism classes and worked some sporting events after retiring from baseball.
\nJohnson rattled off several tips and Griffey gathered what he could from him.<\/p>\n
With typical modesty, Griffey said he\u2019s still very much a work in progress.
\n\u201cYou know, I\u2019m getting better at it because I\u2019m starting to understand and know what they expect from me,\u201d Griffey said of his time working for Masters.com. \u201cI mean, I can go out there and rattle off 30,000 pictures \u2014 anybody can \u2014 but it\u2019s about so much more than that. The lighting is a big thing, the background, so many things.
\n\u201cYou can have a good picture of someone,\u201d he said, \u201cbut if the background isn\u2019t right it can turn out terrible.\u201d
\nGriffey said he wants to shoot motocross racing next. But for now, he\u2019s excited to finish out the week and see how the Masters turns out \u2014 and be there to document a little bit of history.
\n\u201cI like it all, because every sport has its challenges,\u201d Griffey said. \u201cBut this has been a really fantastic week and I\u2019m really grateful for the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
