Artist Insight

Artist Laura Chirino has been attending the festival for 10 years, and she attributes the vibrant atmosphere to her return year after year. “Carnaval on The Mile has always been my favorite festival. It’s very happy, positive,” she said. For her, it’s the perfect combination of art, music, and community.

A New Era for the Festival

This year’s festival is making history, as poster artist Mojo, a non-Hispanic, is the first to create a poster for the event. The result is a stunning piece called “Our Heartbeat.” “This piece pretty much personifies what I feel Miami is,” Reed said. “It’s the soul, the sazon, the music, the vibe, it’s the energy, and also, it’s the liveliness, the colorfulness of Miami.”

A Community-Focused Event

Carnaval Miami brings in millions of dollars into the Magic City, but its impact is even larger. As Pablo Lau, President of the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, explained, “It’s the mission, it’s the purpose of why we’re here. Doing festivals like this to raise funds to give back to the community. It’s a celebration of culture for everyone.”

The Carnaval continues next week with the Calle Ocho music festival. “Oye familia, we’re here. Come hang out and party with us,” Lau said.
