Harvest Moon to Cause Flooding in South Florida

Must read

Introduction to King Tides

It’s that time of the year when the highest astronomical tides push seawater onto streets, yards, and coastal neighborhoods, often without a drop of rain in the forecast.

What Are King Tides?

King Tides are naturally occurring, exceptionally high tides that happen a few times a year when the sun, moon, and Earth align in a way that amplifies the gravitational pull on our oceans.
These tides typically occur in the fall and early winter, coinciding with the closest point of the moon’s orbit to Earth.
Monday night’s Harvest Moon is also a super moon – appearing about 30% brighter and 14% larger than a typical full moon.
While King Tides are not caused by climate change, they highlight the growing challenges coastal communities face from sea level rise.
The same tides that were once a minor inconvenience now regularly flood roads, overwhelm drainage systems, and impact homes and businesses along the coast.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday.  Expect sunny day flooding possibly through Thursday before the threat diminishes into the weekend.
Reminder, flooding can start up to one hour before high tide and continue up to one hour after.
