Introduction to Miami-Dade Schools’ Magnet and Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Programs
The window has officially opened to apply for Miami-Dade County magnet schools and free voluntary pre-kindergarten programs for the upcoming 2026-27 school year. With enrollment down across the district, schools are getting more creative and competitive to retain students.
Overview of Magnet Programs
On Wednesday, NBC6 was given a look inside Jose Marti MAST classrooms — both inside four walls, and out, besides Mother Nature. Instead of simply studying science, students live it.
It’s all part of their environmental STEM magnet program, one of the reasons this school ranks in the top 10 in Florida. “What they learn in their content class is then translated into hands-on activities in their lab class, which gives them much more exposure,” explained Christine Estrada, the magnet lead teacher at the 6-12 academy school.
Benefits of Magnet Programs
It’s one of 350 programs families can apply to starting Wednesday, Oct. 1, for the 2026-27 school year. “When you actually participate in something, it makes it easier to retain information,” said sophomore Yagmur Savashan. “So, I definitely like it more.” Magnet schools offer many opportunities for any interest and ability levels for parents, and it gives them the opportunity to choose, so much for parents and students,” added Estrada.
Enrollment and Application Process
Miami-Dade County Public Schools reported that overall enrollment is down by more than 12,000 students from last year. Among the reasons: a national decline in birth rates and fewer immigrant families arriving in Miami-Dade. Enrollment for the free voluntary pre-kindergarten program (VPK) is also open, with Reggio Emilia and Montessori-inspired options available. Applications are accepted exclusively through the M-DCPS Parent Portal at dadeschools.net. The application window is open from Oct. 1, 2025, to Jan. 15, 2026. Once logged in – easily using an Apple or Google ID – parents can click the Admissions Application tile to get started.
