Rainy Season Picks Up

Must read

Introduction to Rainy Season

South Florida just might finally see the start of the rainy season this week, with 1 to 3 inches of rain likely across the region Monday, and more on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Some parts of Miami-Dade could see as much as 6 inches of rain Monday.
“It potentially seems like the beginning of the rainy season,” said Will Redman, meteorologist with the Miami office of the National Weather Service. “It’s finally here, it looks like.”

Expected Weather Conditions

Late Monday afternoon and evening will see the heaviest downpours, and there will be a slight chance of flash flooding in the coast metro area, the National Weather Service said. Despite cloudy skies, daytime temperatures will reach into the 90s.
Forecasters said a line of broken showers with embedded thunderstorms could bring multiple rounds of heavy rain, frequent lightning and gusty winds.
One wild card: Westerly winds in the morning could collide with developing easterly sea breezes from the Atlantic later in the day. As a result, afternoon thunderstorms that typically occur over the Everglades would be held up and occur over the coastal metro area instead. If so, flash flooding could result.

There is a significant chance of lightning all over South Florida on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday through Wednesday should see repeated bouts of heavy rain in some areas. Once the ground is saturated, flooding can occur more easily.

Rainfall Predictions

Tuesday and Wednesday should be wet as well, with 1 to 2 inches of rain expected each day across a widespread area. Localized amounts of 3 to 4 inches per day are possible, with Miami-Dade County likely to receive the largest totals.
Forecasters said that there would likely be abundant moisture over the region through Wednesday, resulting in scattered and numerous showers popping up in the afternoon and evening.
Thursday through the weekend should see some showers, but fewer than earlier in the week.

Drought Conditions

Western and interior South Florida is still in an extreme drought, according to the weather service, with severe and moderate drought occurring in coastal areas.

Conclusion

The start of the rainy season in South Florida is expected to bring significant rainfall and potential flash flooding to the region. Residents should be prepared for heavy downpours and frequent lightning, and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
