Broward’s newest School Board member made clear Friday that the board won’t lose a conservative voice just because outspoken board member Brenda Fam has resigned.
Adam Cervera, 41, was sworn in Friday to fill the remainder of Fam’s term, which ends in November 2026. His first board meeting will be a workshop on Tuesday.
“As a conservative, I believe in family-first education, school choice and age-appropriate values-based learning,” Cervera said during his remarks, echoing views Fam has stressed during her 2½ years on the board. “I believe in protecting parental rights, not just as a principle, but as a lived reality.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Cervera on April 24 to replace Fam for the District 6 seat. Fam has been the only Republican on the board since November, when two former DeSantis appointees lost elections. Fam said in her resignation letter that she has faced hostility because she disagreed with “the current district culture of prioritizing social justice over academics.”
Fam told the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Friday that she is moving to Tennessee. “Trump country,” she said.
It was Fam who notified Cervera about the position and encouraged him to apply, the new School Board member said recently.
“Thank you, Brenda, for your principled leadership and your commitment to families across Broward County,” Cervera said during his remarks. “I am honored to continue the work that you championed, and I am grateful for the trust and encouragement that you have given me.”
Fam made it clear that she approves of her successor. She passed stickers out before the ceremony with his photo on it and the message, “Supporting Adam Cervera” and in Spanish, “Apoyando a Cervera.”
Cervera asked Fam to swear him in during a brief ceremony, as he was surrounded by his wife, Teressa, who is also a lawyer, and their three young children, Austin, Autumn and newborn Anthony. Friends and family members also attended, cheering loudly for both Cervera and Fam and at one point erupting into loud chants of “USA! USA!”

Cervera will serve District 6, which includes Weston, Cooper City, Davie and parts of Sunrise and Plantation. It’s a district he doesn’t live in, which is allowed for governor appointments.
He grew up in Coral Springs and graduated from Taravella High in 2001 but has spent most of his adult life in Miami-Dade County.
He changed his voter registration to Broward on March 27, using the address of his mother’s senior-living condominium in Tamarac, which is in the district of Board member Lori Alhadeff. Cervera told the Sun Sentinel on Monday that his in-laws also live in Broward, he has been spending a lot of time in Broward, and his wife and children plan to move to the county soon.
Cervera declined to answer further questions following Friday’s ceremony.
During his remarks, he thanked DeSantis, saying, “I share his vision for a school system that empowers parents, upholds high academic standards and puts students first.”
He also gave shout-outs to his supporters, which included several Broward and Miami-Dade elected officials, Broward College President Torey Alston; and Anthony Verdugo, the founder and executive director of the Christian Family Coalition.
“Your letters of support and belief in student-first leadership, parental rights, and traditional values have meant more to me than I can ever express. I am grateful to have earned your trust,” he said.
Cervera said he takes his new responsibility seriously.
“There’s work ahead, restoring trust, raising expectations, and making sure every policy we pass reflects the values and the priorities of the families,” he said. “To the families of District 6, and to all of Broward County, I am here to listen, I am here to lead, and I’m here to deliver.”
