Introduction to the New School Year
Broward schools reported few issues on the first day of school Monday, a stark contrast from a year ago when new metal detectors left thousands of high school students waiting in long lines and missing class.
The devices are now back for a second school year, but the district officials have long resolved the issues, and high school students were able to quickly enter their campuses, Superintendent Howard Hepburn told the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Monday. The metal detectors aren’t used for middle or elementary schools.
Improvements from Last Year
During the first day last year, the metal detectors were constantly going off due to water bottles, binder notebooks and tablets and other devices. To resolve the problem, district officials adjusted the calibration of the machines and increased the training of security staff to remind students to take out metal objects from their bookbags.
Last year, a photo shared on social media showed a gigantic crowd of students at Cypress Bay High in Weston, the largest school in the county, waiting to get into the school., The image resembled a packed outdoor stadium venue.
The metal detector deployment started out so poorly last year that Hepburn forced out the chief of safety and security at the time, just days after the start of school.
