A wet pattern continues for South Florida on Wednesday with numerous showers and thunderstorms quickly rolling through.

A flood advisory was issued for Miami-Dade County in the morning before it expired at 10:45 a.m.

How much will it rain today?

According to the National Weather Service, doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms before 8 a.m. in Miami-Dade, and minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly there.

“Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have already fallen over this area… during the last hour,” the advisory read. “Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected over the area… during the next couple of hours. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. If the rainfall amounts increase more than forecast, then a Flash Flood Warning may be needed for this area.”

How long will the rain last on Wednesday?

The pattern for Wednesday will call for breaks in the rain second half of the day. I’m hopeful the evening commute works out.

Will it rain tomorrow?

We are forecasting one more unsettled day Thursday before drier skies move in late this week and into the weekend. This will turn the thermostat up as 90s make a return.

Tracking the tropics

An area of low pressure is hugging the panhandle of Florida coastline as it moves west. This broad area of low pressure, at its current pace, would reach the Louisiana coast by Thursday.

If the low moves far enough offshore, conditions would appear to be favorable for tropical development and we could be looking at a tropical depression in the next couple of days. Regardless of development, this system would move inland quickly and be more of a rain event than anything else for the region.

Look for heavy rain today across Florida and portions of the north-central Gulf Coast later Wednesday and late this week. Development chances remain at 40%.

What about the drought?

Many areas in South Florida still need the rain and this is a great way to get it—fast moving showers that don’t lead to over the top flooding.
