Representatives and experts discussed what they fear would be catastrophic and devastating possibilities that could occur with the proposed cuts to jobs and funding for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, James Clyburn and Lois Frankel were joined by Dr. Robert M. Atlas and Dr. Frank Marks on Wednesday to discuss the impacts of the proposed budget cuts to NOAA.

If the proposed documents are approved by Congress, it would cut the budget by around $2 billion and reduce the 12,000-member staff by 18%.

The Trump Administration also plans to target research offices and weather labs across several branches of the agency when examining cuts.

“Trump is hellbent on gutting, degrading and setting our weather research and storm warning systems up for failure,” Wasserman Schultz of Florida’s 23rd district said. “This is a generational loss for public safety and science, shuttering more than two dozen world-class weather and climate labs, Trump has proposed, risks losing 75 years of research history.”

Wasserman Schultz also noted that NOAA facilities in South and Central Florida are currently understaffed by 20 to 40 percent, which could pose issues in the future with forecasting accuracy and confidence.

“John Morales (NBC6’s Hurricane Specialist), the most senior meteorologist in South Florida, raised doubts on air that he may be unable to provide accurate forecasts due to a lack of critical data,” Wasserman Schultz said. “If we fail to bolster our weather emergency infrastructure in the worsening climate change, more people will needlessly die.”

Members of the meeting agreed that the proposed cuts are not just dangerous but also reckless to society and the environment, with people becoming more vulnerable to destructive weather events.

Wasserman Schultz mentioned how these systems are especially crucial in Florida because they have historically saved lives and allowed people to plan ahead.

And not only is this predicted to affect those impacted by the storms, but Wasserman Schultz highlighted its impact to weather personnel when it comes to their confidence levels, saying that if forecasters have less confidence in weather forecasts, then people will not only lose their trust in the weather forecasting, but they will also be less likely to evacuate and do what they are told, putting themselves and others at danger.

The director of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, Dr. Robert M. Atlas, predicted that the impacts will be visible within the economy as well.

“It is estimated that this loss (AOML and its cooperative institute) would result in a 20-40 percent decrease in hurricane forecast accuracy, which would cost the economy more that $10 billion for a single hurricane season if only two major hurricanes were to hit the United States,” Dr. Atlas said.

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida’s 20th district said that the meeting was an alert, because of the potential impact to the economy, people, and continuous scientific advancements to keep all safe.
