Storms have been making a return to our local forecast—and may stick around for the Fourth of July. Meanwhile, an area over northern Florida has a chance of tropical development.

Here’s what to know.

Tracking the Tropics

A front is forecast to drift into northern Florida this weekend and stall out.

During hurricane season, these types of frontal boundaries have been known to spin up areas of low pressure and model guidance is hinting at that possibility.

In fact, the National Hurricane Center now forecasts a 40% chance of tropical development along this front within the next seven days.

“Regardless of development, heavy rainfall is possible across portions of the southeast U.S., particularly across the west-central Florida coast,” the hurricane center wrote on its website.

The low or tropical system is forecast to slide to our east. While a direct impact for South Florida doesn’t appear likely, these lows can indirectly affect our forecast.

Rainy days ahead. How’s the drought?

We’ve already seen some action on Wednesday with another round to come between the afternoon and evening.

While organized severe weather doesn’t look to be in the cards, frequent lightning and brief heavy rainfall certainly will.

The storms that have popped up around South Florida aren’t necessarily a bad thing, as many locations are still quite dry for the year.

Fort Lauderdale is down more than 10 inches from where the area should be year-to-date, with Miami down more than five inches.

Fourth of July Forecast

We will likely keep the trend of thunderstorms each day right in the holiday weekend with storm timing shifting a bit.

Winds are slowly turning to the southwest, a pattern that tends to deliver storms during the afternoon and early evening hours with long stretches of dry weather during the morning hours.

This is precisely what we are forecasting for Thursday and into the weekend. We are hopeful that we can kick the storms out in time for fireworks Friday evening, but things can change.

One thing is for sure, we should make some significant drought progress.
