Cold Weather Alert: Polar Vortex to Bring Chilly Conditions to South Florida

Polar Vortex Brings Unusually Cold Weather to South Florida

The National Weather Service is forecasting a multiday stretch of unusually cold weather for South Florida, beginning on Tuesday morning. The region can expect minimum apparent temperatures, also known as the "feels like" temperature, to be in the mid to upper 40s. This is a significant drop from the typical balmy weather South Floridians are accustomed to.

Cold Snaps and Bitter Nights

But it’s not just the daytime temperatures that will be chilly. "Feels-like" temperatures Tuesday night and Wednesday morning will be in the upper 30s in western sections of Palm Beach and Broward counties, with low to mid 40s along the coast. This bitter cold snap is expected to continue on Wednesday and Thursday, with highs only hitting the mid to upper 60s before falling to the upper 40s and low 50s across the region overnight.

Temperatures to Feel Like the 30s in Some Areas

In some parts of western Broward County, temperatures will feel like the 30s early Wednesday morning. This is a significant drop from the typical tropical weather South Florida is known for.

The Rest of the Country in the Grip of the Polar Vortex

While South Floridians will have to bundle up this week, much of the rest of the country will be in the grip of dangerous, bone-chilling cold and wind chills beginning on Monday. A winter storm warning from the National Weather Service on Sunday extended from Kansas and Missouri, where blizzard conditions were reported, to New Jersey for Monday and into early Tuesday. The NWS reported that about 63 million people in the U.S. were under some kind of winter weather advisory, watch or warning on Sunday.

A Return to Warmer Weather Expected

After enduring a chilly morning with lows in the low 50s, Friday’s high should return to the low to mid 70s, slightly warmer and sunny on Saturday.
