Local authorities are urging residents to be vigilant in light of a recent increase in \u201cdistraction thefts\u201d across Southern California. A media release from the Torrance Police Department states that criminals are using \u201cdeceptive tactics\u201d in order to divert victims\u2019 attention while stealing from them.<\/p>\n
\u201cDistraction thefts typically involve a suspect creating a scenario to divert a victim\u2019s attention, allowing them or their accomplices to steal personal belongings or valuables,\u201d Torrance police said. \u201cCommon tactics include asking for directions, spilling a drink or creating a scene that requires assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officials provided four steps for residents to protect themselves:<\/p>\n
Anyone who witnesses suspicious behavior or believes they are a distraction theft or burglary victim should call police immediately.<\/p>\n
“We encourage residents to look out for one another,” the Torrance Police Department said. “We can create a safer community by working together…stay safe and vigilant.”<\/p>\n
