A U.S. Naval Academy graduate has been charged with a hate crime for ripping down a tattoo shop’s LGBTQ+ pride flag and putting it in the trash, according to Annapolis police.<\/p>\n
Charlie Garrett, co-owner of the Dapper Dog Tattoo Shop, reported the vandalism to police on Friday morning. He said it was the third time someone had removed the flag, which reads, \u201cABIDE NO HATRED.\u201d In response, Garrett installed a security camera.<\/p>\n
Closed-circuit video footage showed a man in a black puffer-style vest walking toward the store at approximately 1 a.m. Friday, police said. The man was seen \u201cforcefully ripping\u201d the flag from above the shop\u2019s awning and then putting it into a trash can.<\/p>\n
The suspect, a Dallas resident who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and graduated from the Naval Academy, was charged with a hate crime and malicious destruction of property. His attorney, Caroline Norman Frost, told The Associated Press that her client \u201chas no hate towards any person or protected class.\u201d<\/p>\n
A woman who worked at a nearby restaurant contacted authorities Saturday morning and told police she had served the man in the video the night before. She provided police with the man’s name and credit card receipt, which led to his identification.<\/p>\n
