Unity in the Face of Adversity: St. Monica’s Catholic Church Welcomes Corpus Christi Parishioners

A Time of Crisis

Earlier in the week, the Palisades fire destroyed the 60-year-old Corpus Christi Church, leaving many parishioners without a place to worship. In response, St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Santa Monica welcomed the affected congregation to their Mass on Sunday morning, January 12.

A Sense of Community

Despite being separate churches, many members from each congregation often attend Mass at the other’s church. St. Monica’s, located on the northwest side of the city, is close to the Palisades’ border, making it a natural gathering point for the affected community. "We have many members who live in the Palisades," said Danielle Villalobos, coordinator for children’s faith foundations with St. Monica’s. "Many of our parishioners, they go back and forth… so we share a lot."

A Message of Hope

The service, led by Bishop Matthew Elshoff and Monsignor Lloyd Torgerson, drew over 200 people. Elshoff emphasized the importance of community and the role of the church in times of crisis. "We flourish as a church when we are challenged to live our faith… We are not meant to live our spirituality in isolation, but rather we live that as a community."

A Message of Support

Torgerson led a special prayer for Palisades residents who were in crisis, with about 15 of those parishioners standing while the congregation, many with hands raised, prayed for them. "My heart goes out to all of you," Torgerson said. "If you’re here, I just want you to know that we surround you with love and care and support."

A Community of Faith

The service was an emotional one for many in attendance, including Santa Monica Mayor Lana Negrete, who was born and raised in the city and has a personal connection to the church. "To see families here that have lost everything and to find refuge here in our church just reminds me that we will be resilient," Negrete said. "We will rebuild."

Conclusion

In the face of adversity, St. Monica’s Catholic Church has shown that the power of community and faith can bring people together. As the affected parishioners begin the process of rebuilding and recovery, they can take comfort in the knowledge that they are not alone.
